How to Build Reading Confidence in PreK and Early Elementary Children
Reading confidence isn’t just about knowing the right answer—it’s about believing in yourself as a reader. When children feel confident, they’re more likely to take risks, try new words, and stay engaged with books. For many young readers, especially in PreK through early elementary, confidence is just as important as skill.
Here are five ways to nurture reading confidence at home.
1. Focus on Effort, Not Perfection
Praise the process, not just the result. Instead of saying “You’re so smart,” try saying, “I saw how hard you worked on that word,” or “You didn’t give up, even when it was tricky.” These types of comments build a growth mindset and teach kids that their effort matters more than being perfect.
2. Break Reading into Small, Achievable Steps
Short reading activities help kids experience success quickly. This might mean reading just one page, playing a letter sound game, or spotting sight words in the grocery store. Celebrate those small wins—they add up to big growth.
3. Use Movement to Support Learning
Many young learners need to move their bodies to activate their brains. Try jumping for each sound in a word, acting out vocabulary, or stretching into letter-shaped yoga poses. When reading becomes active and fun, kids are more likely to engage—and stick with it.
4. Make Reading a Shared, Social Experience
Let your child read to a stuffed animal, a younger sibling, or even a pet. Take turns reading pages aloud. Create a reading routine where they feel safe and supported. When reading is associated with connection, children are more likely to feel confident and relaxed.
5. Reflect on Progress Out Loud
At the end of your reading time, ask, “What did you do today that made you proud?” or “What felt easier today than last week?” Naming growth helps children recognize their own progress and strengthens their belief that they are capable.
Building reading confidence isn’t about moving faster—it’s about helping children feel seen, supported, and encouraged. When we slow down and celebrate the process, kids begin to see themselves as readers. And that belief? It’s everything.
